Professor Sunil Narayan Dutt

Dr Professor Sunil Narayan Dutt is currently Senior Consultant, Professor and Distinguished Clinical Tutor and Clinical Director of Otolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery at Apollo Hospitals Group, Bangalore, India.

He qualified from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore winning 12 gold medals in the University. He completed his DORL, MS (ENT) and DNB (ENT) from Mumbai (1994). He received further training in the UK through the Overseas Doctors’ Training Scheme (ODTS) in the West Midlands (1995 – 2002). He was involved in the Birmingham Cochlear Implant Programme for several years (adult and paediatric).

His notable awards include – TWJ Foundation Travel Fellowship, JLO Fellowship; British Skull Base Society Fellowship; BACO Fellowship (Manchester 1995). He added DLO RCS (Eng), FRCS Ed and FRCS (ORL-HNS) to his qualifications. His work on Patient Satisfaction and Quality of Life with Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA) helped him defend a PhD thesis from Nijmegen University, Holland (May 2002).

Dr Dutt has over 70 publications and 60 national and international presentations. He serves as Editorial Board member on Otology-Neurotology and as Chairman, ILC, ENT & Audiology News and is on several Review Boards.

Dr Dutt returned to India and began a CI Programme in Bengaluru in 2002. Today, more than 350 children have received cochlear implants and have joined mainstream education. Dr Dutt runs two NGOs that have helped many underprivileged families to get hearing aids and implants; Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired (SAHI) and Vani Pradan Kendra (VPK), a speech therapy trust dedicated to the cause of deafness for over 10 years.

Dr Dutt is the Founder of the Cochlear Implant Group of India (CIGI), registered in Bengaluru in 2003. This society is 500-members-strong and unites all hearing healthcare professionals: surgeons, audiologists, habilitationists. Dr Dutt’s programme is empanelled by the ADIP (Assistance to Disabled Persons) Scheme, Government of India and by the State Government CI Programmes of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. He is mentoring several young surgeons to learn the skills of hearing implants in India, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Dr Dutt has also been a Key Leader and Mentor in Functional Sinuplasty procedures for Rhinosinusitis and Coblation surgeries in ENT practice.
