Ciarán has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in acute teaching hospitals for over ten years.
His specialist interests are voice and swallowing disorders, which he lectures on at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Trinity College Dublin and University of Limerick.
He is currently completing a PhD examining the prevalence, nature and impact of swallowing disorders in individuals with solid malignancies outside the head and neck and upper GI tract. He is based in the Academic Department of Palliative Medicine, a multidisciplinary research group investigating cardiac function, fatigue, and nutrition in cancer.
Ciarán is an Associate Editor and peer reviewer for BMJ – Supportive & Palliative Care.
